GREAT WHITE CAGE DIVING
G A N S B A A I
Great White Shark diving is strictly regulated by the authorities. It is absolutely safe and done in two areas namely Gansbaai & Mossel Bay. Approximately 12km offshore from Gansbaai there are two islands situated next to each other. Dyer Island is a unique area, where chances to view the great white shark is exceptionally high. The sharks are more active during the winter months from May through to October. Water temperatures are actually better during the winter reaching 16C. Other wildlife species like seals, gannets, cormorants, penguins, whales and dolphins are also likely to be sighted.
Gansbaai is a fishing village 160km from Cape Town. Accommodation is in a b&b establishment and a few restaurants offer good food. On a typical day you meet the skipper early morning and head out to sea for about 2-6 hours. Depending on conditions the bait get set out and the wait begins. Divers get briefed on the procedures and the cage gets secured to a platform. Once a shark is spotted the lines get pulled in closer so that everyone gets a chance to see the sharks.
